Traditional Tales

Communication and Language Development

Children will begin to understand ‘why’ questions and answer questions in response to longer stories. Children will begin to understand an instruction that has two parts eg: get your coat and wait at the door.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children will be learning how to manage their feelings and emotions. We will be learning how to keep ourselves safe and how to care for others including our very own chicks! We will continue to talk about what makes a good friend and how to be kind. We will celebrate our own and other people's achievements in our Friday - Star of the week assembly.

Physical Development

Children will go up steps and stairs, or climb up apparatus using alternate feet.

Children will develop their movements through balancing and ball skills.

Children will develop their ability to skip, hop, stand on one leg and hold a pose for a game like musical statues. Children will become increasingly independent as they get dressed and undressed for example putting coats on and doing up zips, putting on shoes and taking off their wellies.

Literacy

Through our Drama and Narrative Immersion work will be exploring numerous traditional tales including The Gingerbread Man, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and The Beanstalk. Children will learn to sequence stories and talk about settings, characters and events. They will learn the repeated refrains within each traditional tale and start to think of alternative endings. Children will be able to read their name without a visual prompt or photo. Children will begin to clap or count syllables in words. They will begin to spot and suggest rhymes.

Maths

Children will learn about numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6. They will learn to recognise the numeral and the corresponding numicon piece and number-block.  Children will count these quantities onto a five and tens frame and begin to recognise these numbers when seen on different arrangements pictorial arrangements. We will learn about 2d shapes with 3,4,5 and 6 sides! Children will continue to work on careful and clever counting and consolidate touch counting, lining things up to make them easier to count and trying to retain the last number counted.

Understanding the World

Children will understand the past through settings, characters and events in storytelling and songs such as - There was a princess long ago.

Children will use all their senses in hands on exploration of natural materials eg: ice, snow / exploring seasons – Winter / darkness .Children will begin to learn about the changes seen in freezing and melting. We will also be counting down to the hatching of our chicks! Children will see the Chick Cycle and be able to witness all of the changes happening before their eyes!

Expressive Arts and Design

Children will retell the stories through lots of role play activities. We will be creating lots of different representations of key characters such as The Gingerbread Man, The Big Bad Wolf and The Giant. Children will do this through drawing, painting, cooking, music and acting.
